1. Common degradable materials for injection molding products
At present, the common injection molding biodegradable materials in the market can be divided into: Bio based biodegradable materials and petroleum based biodegradable materials. The raw
materials of biodegradable materials are starch, lactic acid and other common biomaterials, which are mainly made by direct polycondensation and ring opening polycondensation. The common bio based injection molding materials are PLA and PHA.
Petroleum based degradable materials are generally made from petroleum, and a large number of inorganic substances such as calcium carbonate are easily mixed in the raw materials, which made the production cost low and the output high. The most common petroleum based injection molding material is PBS (PBAT).
2. Analysis of production difficulties of degradable materials for injection molding products
At present, the domestic production of PLA is about 200000 tons, while the foreign production is about 260000 tons. However, due to the processing technology and purity limitation of PLA, only about 10000 tons of PLA is suitable for manufacturing injection molding products. In addition, PLA has high requirements for the production process. Generally more than 55 degree liquid can’t be added. On the other hand, its flexibility is poor and thus needs to be modified to achieve better mechanical properties.
According to the statistic of the take-out order, the annual take out order quantity in 2019 is about 13 billion. Based on the weight of disposable lunch box consumed per order of about 100g, the annual demand for degradable injection molding raw materials is 1.3 million tons. At present, the output of injection molding grade PLA in China is only 10000 tons, and the gap is more than 130 times.
Petroleum based degradable material PBS (PBAT) has good applicability for injection molding process. Generally, the injection molding temperature is not more than 200 ℃, and the product has good flexibility without adding other modification additives, and can withstand boiling water at about 100 ℃ without decomposition and softening. However, due to the limitation of process conditions, there are no consumer grade PBS (PBAT) products available for sale in China.
3. Summary
At present, the price of disposable plastic injection molding products is more than 5 times higher than that of ordinary plastic injection molding products, such as disposable plastic bags and PBS. That is to say, at present, the price of a lunch box on the market is about 0.50 cents. If it is replaced with degradable materials, the price is expected to be as high as 2.5 yuan, which is cost 5 times more.
