There are many worries that the general plastics market will disappear as the oil dries up. For this point of view, I just take several examples: the concept of oil depletion was put forward around 1970. It is believed that oil production will peak in 1990s, and then gradually decline. However, the fact is that the total oil reserves in 1990 were 995 billion, and the total oil reserves by the end of 2017 were 170 million.
Therefore, there is no need to worry at present. For degradable plastic materials, I think the best place to use them should be the disposable food and beverage packaging industry. From paper straw to degradable film to disposable degradable knife, fork, spoon and plastic lunch box, the demand and progress of disposable packaging industry is obviously shown to all. The non-degradable materials will cause great danger to the environment, so the application of degradable materials to food packaging is both demand and necessity. So in the next decade, the market of degradable plastic products is rising!
At present, degradable materials are generally divided into biodegradable plastics, thermooxidative decomposition plastics, photodegradable plastics and compostable plastics. Generally according to the national standard, the organic composition should be more than 50%, and the degradation rate must be more than 60%. General degradable materials are concluded as shown in the table below.
At present, most of the materials used for injection molding are mixtures rather than single degradable materials, such as pcl-md30%, which is PCL with 30% mineral powder. According to the current technical conditions, thermal oxygen decomposition and photodegradation materials can’t meet the standards of disposable plastic food containers. Biodegradable plastics and compostable plastics are now more widely used. Generally, the preservation period should be more than 180 days, and the degradation period is related to the degree of disintegration and degradation.
